Hypersexualization of Black women on television
Black women have historically been hypersexualized on television as well. Black women characters on TV have often been portrayed as sexually promiscuous and exotic, reinforcing harmful and racist attitudes towards Black women's bodies and sexuality.
In many cases, Black women on television have been depicted as objects of desire for White male characters, perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Black women's sexuality and reinforcing the idea that Black women's bodies exist primarily for the enjoyment of others this contributes to the narrative created during slavery that Black women are sexually vulgar characters.
Often tv shows try to depict black women/girls as infant or child like to display a innocent or powerless vibe which can limit the range of roles and opportunitiesof black female actors. This also highlights the lack of understanding and empathy the world as a whole has for black women.
Television is where the "mammy" and "jezebel" characters of black women have been able to contiue throughout history. These stereotypes of black women contribute to the inequitable portrayal of black women. Their hypersexualization composes a negative narrative of black women and thier identies and experinces. The constant hyper-sexulization of black women is used as a tatic by white supremacist to maintain control and power.
