Introduction

Lebron James: “Black Lives Matter… when you’re black it’s not a movement, it’s a lifestyle.”

Lebron James speaks out about police brutality in the United States which the African American community has been struggling with for generations. This is significant because it shows one of the most famous basketball players to ever live using the NBA as a megaphone to talk about these important systemic issues. From this talk alone, millions of people will have heard what he as to say.

NBA Agent Argues League Aligning Itself With BLM "Really Hurt The Business"

This article talks about the pushback we are seeing within the NBA in regard to social justice movements. Some NBA agents believe that aligning the company with social justice movements will hinder ticket sales. This is important to our project because it shows how the beliefs of the NBA's players are attempting to be unrepresented by management.

For our project, we chose to talk about ethnicity in the NBA and BLM movement. we chose this subject to talk about because this is one of the movements that happen when things only go bad and is forgotten when bad things are not heard. we also like this topic because I (Rahsun) am African American and have an interest in this type of movement. The BLM movement was a movement that took action against racial injustice in our country. We feel as if bigger platforms like the NBA take a stand and take action because of their large platform. What better way to bring awareness to a movement than doing it on national television? Some of the NBA team's actions were kneeling during the national anthem to let people know our country is failing black innocent lives. There was backlash for why they would kneel during the national anthem or not even come out to the court for the national anthem.

Of course, this would get backlash from a lot of the country but the NBA players knew that before they planned to do it as an organization. Not all of the criticism was bad but there was more bad than good. People who understood the families of African Americans that were being hurt during these times understand why players would kneel, but others who have not been in African American skin and shoes can not ignore the fact that there is injustice going on.
